Hey foodies! Welcome! The blog “Taste of Trini- A lil’ spoonful of Trinidad and Tobago in New York” was started in 2015, a few months after I started living in New York. I recreated recipes taught to me by my mom as a way of keeping in touch with my roots. This was a precursor to my YouTube channel, which started about 6 months later. Friends in New York, as well as my husband, started encouraging me to post recipes in video format. I was hesitant at first, but with their support, it happened.
I grew up around many amazing cooks, and the love for food and cooking came natural to me. My Nana (maternal grandfather) was famous for his paratha or “buss up shot” and pepper rotis. He cooked in weddings, parties and at home with his brothers, and they are still known for their “sweet hand”. My great-grandparents, grandparents, and my parents all have an influence on my love for cooking. Growing up, I loved to just sit and watch my Mom, Ma (maternal grandmother), and Ajee (paternal grandmother) cook. Simple things like watching them swizzle dhal with a dhal gutney was fascinating to me.
At 9 years old, I made my first meal (unsupervised): sada roti and sardine choka. After that, I became obsessed with the kitchen. My dad was my biggest supporter. He would eat anything I made and when asked how it tasted, he would smile and say “good job chunkalunks”. My parents, siblings and my entire family have always been supportive.
My YouTube channel showcases recipes, vlogs by my sister Anandi and I (#DreevayWithWe), and a new series (Maco Yuh Kitchen) where YOU can send in your recipe videos or vlogs and I upload them to the channel. Occasionally, on the weekends or for special occasions, I do live Ole Talks. I also feature other cooks and chefs on my channel. Batman or Vishan has done “Cookin’ With Batman”, and Kavita has done “Baking With Kavita”.
Hope you enjoy this blog, as well as my YouTube channel and other social media sites. I am thankful for each and every one of YOU! YOU give me the inspiration to keep posting, and I appreciate it. Thank you for trusting me to guide you in the kitchen!
Taste of Trini is not just about food, but a taste of everything that is Trinbagonian!
Love and blessings,
