Hey foodies! Welcome! The blog “Taste of Trini- A lil’ spoonful of Trinidad and Tobago in New York” was started in 2015, a few months after I started living in New York. I recreated recipes taught to me by my mom as a way of keeping in touch with my roots. This was a precursor to my YouTube channel, which started about 6 months later. Friends in New York, as well as my husband, started encouraging me to post recipes in video format. I was hesitant at first, but with their support, it happened.
I grew up around many amazing cooks, and the love for food and cooking came natural to me. My Nana (maternal grandfather) was famous for his paratha or “buss up shot” and pepper rotis. He cooked in weddings, parties and at home with his brothers, and they are still known for their “sweet hand”. My great-grandparents, grandparents, and my parents all have an influence on my love for cooking. Growing up, I loved to just sit and watch my Mom, Ma (maternal grandmother), and Ajee (paternal grandmother) cook. Simple things like watching them swizzle dhal with a dhal gutney was fascinating to me.
At 9 years old, I made my first meal (unsupervised): sada roti and sardine choka. After that, I became obsessed with the kitchen. My dad was my biggest supporter. He would eat anything I made and when asked how it tasted, he would smile and say “good job chunkalunks”. My parents, siblings and my entire family have always been supportive.
My YouTube channel showcases recipes, vlogs by my sister Anandi and I (#DreevayWithWe), and a new series (Maco Yuh Kitchen) where YOU can send in your recipe videos or vlogs and I upload them to the channel. Occasionally, on the weekends or for special occasions, I do live Ole Talks. I also feature other cooks and chefs on my channel. Batman or Vishan has done “Cookin’ With Batman”, and Kavita has done “Baking With Kavita”.
Hope you enjoy this blog, as well as my YouTube channel and other social media sites. I am thankful for each and every one of YOU! YOU give me the inspiration to keep posting, and I appreciate it. Thank you for trusting me to guide you in the kitchen!
Taste of Trini is not just about food, but a taste of everything that is Trinbagonian!
Love and blessings,
Reshmi.

You are appreciated and put a lot of care and nurturing into your dishes. Thank you. Hopefully I can duplicate your paratha roti. Buss up shot and other dishes.

I just found your youtube channel today and I was so blown away. Some of my favorite dishes and some new ones my grandmother never made. I grew up in Trinidad and learned to cook from watching my grandmother in the kitchen. I love how you really take your time explaining things and also variations and substitutions especially for us Trini’s that live in the states. I tried your curry stew chicken and stew red beans and it just reminded me of home and i got my chicken to cook exactly the way i remember my grandmother own tasting. Thank you for being so dedicated to posting videos and keep them coming.

Hi, I have looked at many variations on how to make doubles and no doubt in my mind yours is the best. I have tried your doubles and posted it in a few food groups that I am in and got great review on it. I can attest that the color of the Bara is exactly how I like it and the texture is out of this world. The filling for the Bara which is the channa is also very tasty and the way I like it. Just taking this time to say thank you for sharing your skills with us.

Hi Natasha,
I am originally from Trinidad and Tobago but I have been living here in Florida for quite some time. I have been so very interested in telling you how very sweet you are for sharing so many wonderful Recipes. I LOVE cooking, especially the older i get and oddly enough I really only want Trini Food if I have a choice so I am ever so grateful for your kindness and generosity sharing the real recipes of my homeland. God willing I’ll get the opportunity to meet you in in person one day as that would be a real treat if your personality is true to life what you present in your cooking videos. I live in the Tampa area so if you’re ever in town don’t hesitate to drop me a note.
PS: please post a recipe for Hops Bread, I tried the one that you included with the Chana Recipe but I don’t think I followed along real well, but I’m still trying and learning anyway.

Hi fellow trini my husband and I love your videos particularly the ones you do back home. What a nostalgic experience for me.. I was born in Trinidad but left when I was only 16 way back in the late sixties, you weren’t born yet, of course 😉. Trinidad was still in her developing years but I loved it…please keep doing what you do, it’s a gift to those of us who like to go down memory lane and for the younger generations who need to keep our culture alive.

Hello, I just wanted to drop you a note to say how much I enjoy your you tube videos. I found them while searching ‘sada roti’ and I’ve seen all since. So far I’ve made your corn soup, sada roti and red beans – they all came out amazing and my children and husband love it. Please keep sharing, you’re very informative and so easy to follow. Lots of love from Trinidad.

Hi I just recently found your videos and I am really enjoying all the cooking you and Bat are doing. I am from Trinidad but living in Houston, Texas for the last 16 years. Here in Texas I am not fortunate as you in New York to get fresh Trini seasoning and vegetables. I crave dasheen bush bhagee but do not get it here at all. I also wish for the pimento peppers. I cook a lot and have forgotten how to cook some of the local Trini dishes, but from your videos, I am now cooking Trini style for my kids, who although born in Texas, loves our Trini flavors. I also enjoy looking at all the other videos, remembering myself as a kid in Trinidad. I saw the video with you eating the plums with pepper and salt, and that was one of my favorite thing to eat. Also, the mango chow video was so mouth-watering. Wish I could get some right now:)
Thanks for all your videos. Keep on posting. You are doing a great job.
